Naruto Uzumaki was Mostly Alone During his Childhood Years

Naruto's titular protagonist is among the most popular anime leads of all time. His journey to becoming the Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village is a tale of perseverance, dedication and friendship. However, Naruto's past was undoubtedly filled with loneliness and pain. The entire village shunned him because of the Nine-Tailed Fox that was sealed inside him at birth. Amid all the hatred and prejudice, Naruto found friends who would become his loyal companions on his journey.

There has been a long-standing debate among the Naruto fandom about who his first friend truly was. Some believe it was the duo of Shikamaru and Choji, who bonded with Naruto during the Chunin Exam and have stayed with him ever since. But while those two are indeed great friends with the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki, the reality is that Naruto's first true friend was none other than Sasuke Uchiha.

Naruto's teammate and lifelong rival, Sasuke initially despised the protagonist's guts and vice versa. Still, the two were forced to get along with each other as they became members of the same cell. They took on various missions together, some of which almost needed them to sacrifice their lives. However, their friendship if it could be called that at this point didn't start off great. A cell's main driving force should be teamwork, but Naruto and Sasuke were more akin to a cat and dog. They couldn't agree on almost anything, with Naruto mostly becoming a dead weight in the early days.

Despite the animosity between them, Sasuke and Naruto went through a lot together. The more they traveled on missions, the more they came to understand each other, and they finally acknowledged one another during the fight with Zabuza. Naruto lets go of his envy toward the young Uchiha and believes in his genius, while Sasuke likewise recognizes Naruto's unpredictability and perseverance. By the time the Chunin Exam arrived when Naruto eventually befriended Shikamaru, Choji and the others the two Team 7 ninjas were already close friends. Sasuke even admitted wanting to fight Naruto during the exam.

Both Naruto and Sasuke acknowledged the other as their closest friend during their titanic battle at the Valley of the End. At the time, Sasuke had resigned himself to following the devious Orochimaru in pursuit of power but Naruto wasn't simply going to let him go, leading to the two clashing with all their might. At the same time, Sasuke was determined to kill Naruto to awaken his Mangekyo Sharingan; the young Uchiha remembered his brother telling him that the only means to acquire the Mangekyo is to kill one's closest friend. Ultimately, however, he left Naruto alive.

This proves that despite Sasuke's general demeanor toward Naruto, he does view him as his closest friend. The bond forged during their time in Team 7 was undoubtedly significant, though Sasuke was eventually consumed by his hate for his older brother. Succumbing to his desire for revenge, he repeatedly pushed Naruto and the others away. So while he was indeed the Jinchuriki's first friend, it is far more debatable whether Sasuke has always been a good friend to Naruto.
