Masashi Kishimoto's Upcoming Manga Starring Naruto's Father
As detailed on Crunchyroll, Masashi Kishimoto's upcoming one-shot manga starring Minato, winner of the NARUTOP99 character poll, will launch in a summer issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump. According to Kishimoto, the manga's plot focuses on "the secret story behind the development of Minato's technique." The official Naruto and Boruto Twitter accounts featured promotional art highlighting Minato's victory.
The aforementioned NARUTOP99 was a global polling event to determine the fanbase's favorite characters. Fans were allowed to vote from Dec. 17, 2022, to Jan. 31, 2023. The results, showcased as a Top 100 list, revealed that Minato had bested his son for the #1 spot. The second and third-place winners are Itachi Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, respectively. Naruto came in as the franchise's sixth most popular character.
Sakura Fans Attempted to Manipulate the Outcome
Although Minato was ultimately deemed the winner of the NARUTOP99 poll, some Sakura fans reportedly encouraged one another to illegitimately manipulate the results, ensuring that the pink-haired ninja would win her manga. This was merely a smaller part of a larger incident, where Sakura-centered chat groups such as "Sakura Daily Vote" were caught sharing tutorials on the use of mass voting software in an attempt to help Sakura win the "Best Fight" poll, a prelude poll to NARUTOP99. Sakura's fight with the puppetmaster, Sasori, ended up in first place, even beating out Naruto and Sasuke's famous reconciliatory fight.
Naruto is the fifth best-selling manga series of all time, with over 250 million copies in circulation worldwide, as of March 2023. While the Naruto manga concluded in November 2014, the character's legacy continues in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, launched in May 2016. This manga is currently in the middle of its Omnipotence" arc, which focuses on a Cyborg named Eida and her titular ability, which she manipulates to make everyone in the Hidden Leaf believe that Boruto is actually Kawaki.
Part 1 of Pierrot's Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime series concluded on March 26, about midway through the "Code" arc. This arc revolves around the titular villain and his attempts to attain Godhood. Back in March, Pierrot announced that it had greenlit Part II. However, the studio has not yet confirmed a release window.
Naruto and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations are available in English from VIZ. Naruto, Naruto Shippuden and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations are available to stream on Hulu and Crunchyroll.
